Core Network

The CUBINlab core comprises all essential machines and services required to run the network. Currently, this involves a firewall and NAT machine with live Internet access, a dual processor user machine, UPS for both, laser and inkjet printers, and layer 1-2 network elements.

For reliability and performance, the firewall and main user hosts run the FreeBSD UNIX operating system. All network nodes are centrally administered through the use of DHCP and hardened NIS where appropriate. The CUBINlab nameserver also resides within the core, as are other advanced services such as the VPN and the backbone infrastructure of the secure WLAN.

The entire network is backed up from the core each night to DDS4 tapes using the backup system AMANDA.
